September 2003

Night of the Javelinas! What's a javelina? It's a native pig-like animal. See Javelina.

Hazel and I were about to retire for the night when she screamed, "You have to see this!" I rushed to the window as we watched a pack of maybe 10 javelinas enter our little courtyard via the stairs. There was even a baby or two, but they protect them very well. That's why you cannot see them in these pictures. As I snapped these pictures, one of them, obviously the leader, put himself in protective stance between the foraging pack and us.

We have gone from being a little apprehensive of these ugly little animals to admiration. What can I say? Tucson is a nature-lover's paradise.

A pack of javelinas roaming through our apartment courtyard.

Looking for food.

They see me!

Eating mesquite beans.

The alpha male, he put himself between them and us.
